Graveside services for Bennie Humber Jr. 70, of Lufkin Texas, will be held Saturday, September 12, 2020, at 12 noon in the Davis Memorial Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, September 11, 2020, from 12 noon till 7 p.m. Mr. Humber was born on March 29,1950, in Houston, and died on September 9, 2020, in Lufkin. Humber Jr was born on March 29, 1950, to Bennie Humber Sr. and Lucille Hawthorne in Houston, Texas. He was raised in the Pennington community and attended school in Groveton, Texas where he graduated in 1968. He met and married the love of his life, Erma Jean Hodge on November 12, 1971. Their union created four beautiful children. Bennie enlisted in the military. He served in the army for 5 years and fought in the Vietnam War. He was later discharged and returned home. Bennie worked at Lufkin Foundry for a short time and then went on to join Lufkin ISD. He worked in the child nutrition department until his retirement in 2003 after 30 years. He loved the Lord and was a servant leader. He began by teaching Sunday school and later went into the ministry. In 2003 Bennie was ordained and later under the leadership of Minister Jimmy Hadnot, he became the pastor of Hodge Memorial. He continued to serve and lead until he stepped down. He continued to serve at the church in any capacity needed. He also fellowshipped with Pastor Brad and worked on the greeting committee. Bennie was always known for a good joke or to say something off the cuff. He cheered for any team that was NOT the Dallas Cowboys and enjoyed the conversations that ensued. The "Sweet Man" will be missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 42 years, and his son: Kendrick Fitgerald Humber. He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Yulanda Humber Dixon (Aaron), Jacqueline Jones (Alexander), and Damien Humber. His grandchildren: Ayse Humber and Kendrick Jackson. His siblings: Lena Holden (Keith) and Dwight Scurlock. His sons called him "Chef': Sean Lexima, Burnis Hadnot, Corey Buggs, Bryan Duren, and Brandon Kirkwood. As well as several nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
