Services for Charles R. Johnson, 68, of Lufkin is scheduled at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2023, in the First Missionary Baptist Church, 410 Scarborough St, Lufkin. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mr. Johnson was born on October 29, 1954, in Nacogdoches, and died Tuesday January 3, 2023, in Lufkin. Charles Randolph Johnson was born on October 29, 1954, to J.L. Johnson and Ruby Bruton Johnson (Scott) in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Charles graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1973, after which he enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served from 1975 to 1992. During his tenure, Charles received numerous ribbons and medals for his achievements. Charles was honorably discharged as a sergeant. His military career allowed him to travel across the United States as well as Internationally while being a single father. Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to Texas and established a permanent residence in Lufkin, Texas. His civilian career path included tenure from Champion International, Brazos Transit District, and finally the Lufkin ISD Transportation Department, where he remained until his death.
Charles developed a loved for horses, rail rides, and barbecuing. He could often be found riding his beloved horses, Sassy and Sandy across East Texas and Houston, with his portable smoker in tow. Throughout his life he was associated with multiple riding clubs and had a Masonic affiliation with James T. Dorsey Lodge #114.
He pursued a degree in supervisory management and Business Administration at Hawaii Pacific University and Angelina College while enlisted, as well as after his discharge.
Charles had a firm foundation in the church and served the Lord with fervor throughout his life, no matter his location. With each new military placement, he made finding a church home top priority to ensure his family received spiritual guidance. The stewardship with his current shepherd, Pastor W.R. Ricks began with his return to Texas in 1992, when he became a member of New St. Matthew Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, Texas. He served faithfully as a member and Armor Bearer to Pastor Ricks for many years there. After Pastor Ricks was appointed to lead First Missionary Baptist Church in Lufkin, Charles transferred his membership here where he has faithfully served as a deacon and a proud member of the Male Chorus.
On January 3, 2023, Charles was called home to be with our heavenly Father. When he reached heaven, he was greeted by his father, J.L. Johnson and his brother Derry Carter.
He leaves behind to forever cherish his memory: Loving wife of 20 years, Beverly Johnson; Beloved mother, Ruby H. Scott; Daughter, Tiffani McGuire (Desmond); Grandchildren: Brianna Johnson-Harris, Sanai McGuire & Desmond (Kace) McGuire; Stepson, Calvin Harrison; Grandchildren: Kamiyah Harrison, Jamiyah Harrison, & Ladeja Daniels; Great-grandchildren: Quentin Petty, Alaysia Thompson, & Ke'Ashia Harrison; Brother, Jason Johnson; Sisters: Alvita Johnson & Jaquay Johnson Williams (Byron); Nephews and Nieces: Michaela Johnson & Javon Johnson, Madison Linzey; Special friends: Officer Jeff Taylor and Mr. Charles Hunt; A host of other close relatives and friends.
