“My Son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother. Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you roam, they will lead you;”
A “life well-planned, well-lived, and well-enjoyed” is a befitting motto for Dorothy Mae (Chatman) Lynch. She was full of life until her departure home. Everyone who came into contact with her was captivated by her jovial spirit and contagious laughter. A servant at heart, as evidenced by her career-choice of Registered Nurse, she worked tirelessly to ensure that those under her care received her devoted attention. She worked long hours at Memorial Medical Center (now: CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial Lufkin), and seemed to love every minute of it. There, she made life-long friends and colleagues.
Dorothy began her life of servitude on September 19, 1941. She was born in Natchitoches Louisiana to the parents of the late Dorsey and Effie Lee Chatman. As a child, Dorothy’s first love was basketball. Not only did she love it, she was good at it. And even as her life drew close to an end, one of the joys of her life was attending the basketball games of her grandsons. It did not matter that she oftentimes found herself erroneously cheering for the opposing team. To simply attend the games was the only thing that mattered.
Dorothy attended school in Natchitoches Louisiana, and eventually graduated from Saint Matthews High School, in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Later in life, with her kids in tow, she attended and graduated from Angelina College with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. She eventually became a Registered Nurse, and faithfully served Memorial Hospital for 38 years!
The sixth child of nine children, she was preceded in death by her brothers James and Roosevelt Chatman, as well as her sister, Curly Jackson.
She married the love of her life, Otis Lynch (as evidenced by the smile on her face in all her pictures with him) and gave birth to two daughters: Brenda Darnell Lynch and Felicia Lanette (Lynch) Moody. She was an excellent and strong mother who gave an equal dose of both love and discipline. She served her husband and children well up to the time of her death. In the last two years of her life, she resided with her daughter Felicia (Lisa) and later her daughter Brenda, where she continued to assist them in whatever ways possible. She was always willing to help in whatever ways she could find. (Ask the grand kids!)
She leaves to rejoice in the glory of her life, her two daughters, Brenda Lynch, Bedford TX, Felicia Moody, Leander TX; four grandchildren: Charlae Moody, Charles Moody III, Chase Moody, Chanceller Moody, all of Leander TX, and God-daughter, Jasmine Maxey, Houston Texas.
Sister-in-law: Mary Chatman, Capitol Heights, MD, Margie Gardner (Billy), Mildred Salter,Jessie Lynch, Mattie Lynch , all of Lufkin, TX. Mary Chatman (Walter) and Thelma Watts both
Of Houston, TX.
Sisters: Ivory Pitre, Los Angeles CA, Gloria Fullwood, Wilmington, NC, and Betty Varnado, Panama City, FL. Brothers: Phelt Chatman and Walter Chatman (Mary) both of Houston, TX. Sister-in-law: Mary Chatman. And a hosts of devoted nieces, nephews and friends.
