Frank Lane, Jr., the Night Train, Coach Lane, my ole friend. We all learned something from this teacher, athlete, coach and businessman. A philosopher of hard times and good, he’d share his musings with anyone patient, and lucky, enough to cross his path. His early years were spent overcoming the handicap of racism when it wasn’t just a catch-all tool of the Left. Any other handicap was just motivation to harden and craft himself into an All American athlete that rose even to the NFL.
Coach Lane had to fight for his share all his life; he didn’t seem to regret it and he shared wisdom concerning it. Students would hit him up for a few bucks all the time and he was always willing, even creating after school jobs for them in the classroom where many would find their first taste of belonging to something in high school. Many a would-be athlete benefited from his after school coaching even after he stopped coaching officially.
A loyal friend, he promised to have your back, because, he added,”Jesus has mine.”
Ironic he passed on January 6th. Having fought for justice and an even break all his life, the new disarray of America represented by this date would be something he’d want nothing to do with. With much love for his family, friends and the thousands of kids he impacted in teaching, Coach Lane knew it was time for him to go on home.
Frank Lane, Jr. was a fine man. I, among many, will miss knowing he is out there and available for anyone that needed him.
