Georgia Mays' Obituary
Service for Mrs. Georgia Mays, 92, of Lufkin will be held at 11 a.m., in the First Missionary Baptist Church, 410 Scarborough St., Lufkin, TX. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Mays was born January 2, 1930, in Lufkin, and died on Thursday, June 9, 2022, in Lufkin.
Georgia Mae Durham Mays, age 92, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, June 9, 2022. She was born January 30, 1930, in Angelina County, Lufkin, to Zach and Ermie (Frazier) Durham, both preceded her in death.
Mrs. Mays graduated from Dunbar High School. She married Willie Tom Mays and to that union were added a son, Arthur Lee Mays and daughter, Doris Jean (Mays) Schultz, and stepdaughter Dorothy Jean (Mays) Wilson. She joined church at an early age. As an adult, she united with First Missionary Baptist Church, Lufkin, TX under the pastorate of Rev. William R. Ricks, where her membership remained until her death.
Mrs. Mays lived her life to the fullest. She enjoyed the outdoors especially gardening, hunting, and fishing. She loved spending time rising her beloved chickens for the fresh eggs she shared. She was never one to miss an opportunity to share her passion for God's word with others. She was known for not holding back her opinion and for telling it like it is, even when it wasn't what you wanted to hear. She had an uncanny way of keeping you on your toes while making you feel special. She had a big heart and yet she sugar-coated nothing. She was a die hard Dallas Cowboys' fan and her favorite quote was "I'm with them, win or lose."
She will be sorely missed and is survived by a son, Arthur Lee Mays and wife, Jill Cornelia (Gladden) Mays of Missouri City, TX; a daughter, Doris Jean (Mays) Schultz of Lufkin, TX; a step-daughter, Dorothy Jean (Mays) Wilson of Houston, TX; a sister, Irma Jean McClain and husband, Benjamin of Lufkin, TX; two brothers, Robert Durham and wife, Ola (Ricki) of Dallas, TX; Leroy Durham Sr. and wife, Berta of Lufkin, TX; grandchildren, Rodrick Dixon Davis and wife, Tanyk (Grant) Davis, Demarcus 'Jack' Dewayne Davis,
Clinton Arthur Mays, Mitchell Allen Mays and wife, Rie (Nomura) Mays, step-grandchild, Louis (Lucky) Wilson; great-grandchildren, Ja'mya Washington, Diyon Davis, Tay 'Lee Davis, Uma Iris Mays, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and acquaintances. All of whom loved her dearly and will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, and undying love and caring for them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 46 years, sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillie and Israel Gardner, Irene and Edgar Hardin, Lela and Otis Alexander, Cleora Richard. Brothers and sisters-in-law, James L. ,Willie Mae Durham, Charlie and Suzette Durham, Leslie (Bill) and Oleta Durham, Henry and Diana Durham, and great- grandchildren , Latevia Davis.
