Horace Jones' Obituary
Funeral service for Horace Jones, 90 in Lufkin will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Colonial Mortuary. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mr. Jones was born March 17, 1933, Lufkin and died February 10, 2024, in Lufkin.
Rev. Horace Jones was a devout and dignified man of God who served in many capacities in the church his entire life. Not only was he a minister, he taught Sunday School and Bible class. He was a dedicated organist, and he also played the piano. He would accompany his sister, Leola Davis, on the piano at Saint Luke Baptist Church in Saint Augustine. He also played the organ at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Lufkin.
Rev. Jones was born to Willie D. and Hester Jones. He attended elementary school at the old Cedar Grove School and high school at Dunbar High in Lufkin, Texas. As a young man, he attended church at Memorial Chapel CME in Cedar Grove and later O'Quinn Street Church of Christ in Lufkin. In 1951, he moved to Los Angeles, California where he met and married his wife, Thelma. Together they raised two children, Samson Jones and Minnie Jones. He served as deacon and minister at Greater Faith Temple in Los Angeles under the leadership of Pastor Walter E. Moore and Minnie Lee Moore, who was the founder.
After 44 years at the West Los Angeles Department of Veterans Affairs, Horace retired and returned to the Cedar Grove community where he continued his service to the Lord, living faithfully until his death. He served as a Bible School teacher, organist, and assistant pastor at Saint Luke Baptist Church in San Augustine until his health failed him. He then united with the World Outreach Ministries Church of the Christ in Cedar Grove under the leadership of Pastor W. Jernigan.
Reverend Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Jones; his son, Samson Jones; his parents, Willie and Hester Jones; and two brothers, Willie B. (Sam) Jones and Edward (Bill) Jones of Lufkin, Texas.
He leaves to cherish his memory, one daughter, Minnie Jones-Moore of Las Vegas, Nevada; eight grandchildren, Michael Moore, Jr., Marcus Moore, Matthew Moore, Martin Jones, Monet Smith, Moriah Moore, Montell (Walter) Moore of Las Angeles and Nicole Jones of Moreno
Valley; one great grandchild, Maxton Tomar Moore of Los Angeles, California; four brothers,
Rolan (Vallie) Jones of Lufkin, Texas, Albert (Gladys) Jones of St. Petersburg, Virginia, Elbert Jones of Lufkin, Texas, Larry (Shirley) Jones of Lufkin, Texas; and two sisters, Leola Davis of San Augustine, Texas, and Holly (Joe) Williams of Richardson, Texas.
He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
