Lera B. Harper's Obituary
Services for Lera B. Harper, 87, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Missionary Baptist, 410 Scarbrough St., Lufkin, TX. Co-Pastor-Supt. Arthur Aikin, Sr. of the Greater Williams Temple, Saginaw, Michigan, will be the officiant and eulogist, presiding will be Rev. William McKinley Jackson. Burial will follow in the St. John's Cemetery in San Augustine, TX. Visitaion will be Friday at the funeral from 6 - 8 p.m.
Mother Lera B. Sowell - Harper was born July 21, 1927 in San Augustine, TX. to the late Lucinda Hunt and Marshall Sowell. She grew up in San Augustine, County. She joined in Holy Matrimony on February 23, 1946 to Earnest Harper, the marriage lasting for over 69 years until her demise. In her early years, Mother Lera was a member of St. John Baptist Church in San Augustine, TX. Upon moving to Lufkin she joined the First Missionary Baptist Church later moving her membership to Warren Temple True Light Holiness Church in Lufkin, where she became active as a choir member, prayer warrior, mission worker and eventually the Church Mother. Over fifteen years ago, she along with her husband, started a weekly in home Bible study and today it is still thriving.
Left to mourn the loss of the love of her life: husband of 69 years, Earnest: Children: Clyde (Barbara), Lera (Arthur Aikin), Faye (IV Washington), Ray (Shirley), Robert (Lois), Clevon (Cathy), Dr. La'Myrtle (Kingsley Ituah- deceased), Dianna (Willie Rutledge), Felita and Dorcia (Rongi); 28 grandchildren; 37 great- grandchildren; and a wealth of nieces and nephews.
