Services for Odessa Terry Sanders, 99 of Lufkin will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2023, in Greater Shiloh Baptist Church, 1519 Williams St, Lufkin. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Sander was born on October 2, 1923, in Lufkin, and died on Monday, August 14, 2023 in Lufkin.
Mrs. Odessa Sanders was born on October 2, 1923 in Alto, Texas, to the parentage of the late Jim Allen Porter and Cashie Moore.
Her religious affiliation was with Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Lufkin, Texas. Mrs. Sanders received her formal education from the Lufkin Public Schools. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Prairie View College, and a Master of Education from Texas College, Tyler, Texas. (She Majored in Secondary Education, and her Minor was in Home Economics). Mrs. Sanders also attended Summer School Classes at the University of Colorado A&M University, East Texas State at Commerce and Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
She taught at Lee High School in Midway, Texas, E.J. Campbell High School in Nacogdoches, Texas, Dunbar High School and Lufkin High School in Lufkin, Texas, Lincoln Jr. High School and French High School in Beaumont, Texas. Mrs. Sanders was the director of the Lufkin Day Care Center for 1 1 years and a Nutrition Consultant for the Head Start Program for 9 years. She was also a member of the Top Ladies of Distinction (TLOD) in Lufkin, Texas. Her employment also consisted of working at a Clothing Factory for 1 year. She made Model Garments for Foley's in Houston, Texas; She had been employed by a Clothing Factory in Los Angeles, California. Her total years of employment during her lifetime was 51 years. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and dear friends.
