Roger Hurts' Obituary
The funeral service for Roger Hurts, 67 of Lufkin is scheduled at 2 p.m., in the Woods Memorial Temple, 230 Leach St, Lufkin, TX 75904. The burial will follow in the Davis Memorial Garden. Mr. Hurts died on Sunday, June 9, 2024, in Houston. Roger Lee Hurts, Sr. was born on January 20, 1957, to the parentage of Ivory Hurts and Rosa Lee Garrett Hurts in Pineville, Louisiana.
He attended Public School in Bunkie, Louisiana, and graduated with the Class of 19676. He relocated to Texas shortly after graduating High School and later joined the United States Army National Guard serving proudly for four years and was Honorably Discharged. Upon being discharged, he met the love of his life, Willie Mae Shields, and her daughter Demetra Shields. They were united in Holy Matrimony on November 3, 1979. During this union, Demetra was adopted and given the last name Hurts. Also to this union five daughters and a son were born: (Terina, Jocelyn, Jessica, Rosa, and Rosilyn); A son (Roger, Jr.).
Roger had been employed at various jobs ranging from Customer Service to Warehouse, and ultimately ended up with the job he loved, Lufkin Industries. He worked tirelessly and faithfully until he retired after 40-plus years. Roger joined the Zion Temple Church of God in Christ, 23 0 Leach Street, Lufkin, Texas, under the leadership of Pastor John Woods and later under the leadership of Superintendent Chester Robinson. He was known for having a great sense of humor and thoroughly enjoyed joking around. He worked hard every day to ensure he brought home the bacon. In doing so, he rarely ever walked into the house without a gift for his wife, even if it was just a hug and a kiss.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Ivory Hurts and Rosa Lee Garrett Hurts; Brothers, Izaiah Hurts, and Fred Hurts Sr.; and a sister, Mary Hurts.

A loving and devoted wife of forty-four years, Willie Mae Hurts; Seven daughters, Demetra Hurts, Terina Taylor, Jocelyn (Shane) Lee, Jessica Hurts, Rosa (Berry) Scott, Rosilyn Hurts; Special daughter, Letisha Houston; Son, Roger Hurts, Jr.; Grandchildren, Jauron Taylor, Jaylon Marshall, Demetric Marshall, Khaelin Scott, Keelan Taylor, Cirvyve Lee, Ai'yuna Lee, D'Corian Haywood, O'Marion Scott, and Peyton Scott; Great-grandchildren, Jenesis, Brielle, Jaxon, and Mason; Brothers, David Hurts, Leroy Hurts, Jammie (Verna) Hurts, and George (Barbara) Hurts; Sisters, Pat Armstead, Geneva Hurts, Barbara Hurts, and Vera (Francis) Okocho. A Host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
