Arverta Mosley's Obituary
Arverta Frazier-Mosley (106), also known as “Time” or “Easter” was the firstborn of 13 children to the union of Mary and Harrison Frazier, Sr. She was born on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1912 and departed this earthly life on June 4, 2018. She grew up in the Boykins Settlement Community in Angelina County, Texas. Arverta was studious and after completing public school at Vernon County Line School; she soon graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics at the age of 17. Arverta completed her graduate studies at Prairie View A&M and Texas Technical University. Her love for people and teaching led to educational careers in Jasper County and Jamestown High Schools; and as a dietician at Carver High School and in Goose Creek and Harris County, Texas.
Arverta Mosley joined the Texas Extension Service in Smith County, Tyler, Texas in 1943. In 1944, she was appointed the first county home demonstration agent for the black community in Polk County. Her professional work spanned a wide spectrum of home and family services, and they encompassed a variety of individual and group activities such as 4-H and Girl Scouts. In 1971, Arverta was appointed the County Home Demonstration Agent for the entire county. Mrs. Mosley has received the National Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Extension Home Economists. She was honored and listed in the 1974-75 “Who’s Who of American Women.” She was a member of the Exxon Annuitant Club, very active in her community serving on several Boards of Directors. Mrs. Mosley accepted Jesus as her personal savior at a young age. She was an active member of Livingston Church of God in Christ. As a faithful member she held various positions such as Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, Bible Band Teacher, Treasurer, and Mother of the Church.
Arverta married Melvin James Mosley of Baytown, Texas in 1946. They made their home in Baytown but set roots in Livingston, Texas where both retired. Arverta was preceded in death by her husband after 37 years of marriage, her parents, and 11 siblings. At the time of her passing, she was living with her sister, Rose Corder of Lufkin, TX. Mrs. Mosley’s legacy of love touched lives as daughter, wife, sister, aunt, co-worker, friend, and mom and grandma to many.
Funeral services: Saturday, June 9, 2018 @ 11:00am at First Missionary Baptist Church, 410 Scarbrough St., Lufkin, TX 75904.
Time of remembrance (Wake) is Friday, June 8th, at Colonial Mortuary, 1600 Sayers St., Lufkin, TX from 5:00 – 7:00pm.
