I started working with Mrs Odessa at Lufkin Nursing Center when I was 18 in 1987. I got close to her and Mrs. Delores Williams right away and they were my work mom’s. I was so young and naive and they began a very protective unit that lasted many years over me. The first thing they taught me was just because someone smiles to your face does not make them your friend. Then I got my medication aide certification and worked right with them and then went to nursing school and Mrs Odessa was my biggest fan and motivator. She encouraged me in so many ways but spiritually she was a Godsend telling me God had a plan for me. Not too long after I got my RN Mrs Odessa got me in the medication room again and she says Mary you are not here to make everyone happy and you’re not going to! You are here to take care of these patients not be anyone’s friend and if you lose your license they are not going to pay your bills and you can’t do your job so man up and pray for guidance. I have drew off that pep talk my entire career and been grateful for this amazing lady. I will miss her but I have no doubt she is having a great time with her Savior!!!
I loved Sister Odessa, every time I saw her I’d tell her “I love you” she would say, “you do” with that smile. Love and sympathy to family and friends🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
